About Student Scholarships in Sweden

Talented students can open up avenues for themselves anywhere and a student scholarship is one of them that are granted to forted students to support them financially.Each year over 500 student scholarships are provide to researchers and students through a government agency, The Swedish Institute for those who come to Sweden in seeking their goals at a Swedish university for higher education. The competition is high to avail these scholarships and the number varies each year. Many international students also accommodate themselves without the finances granted by these scholarships.

Swedish Institute scholarships programs:

Students that apply for English language scholarships program in Sweden predominantly focus at master level or research/advance studies. Scholarships provided under Swedish institute are.

  1. Guest Scholarships:
    These scholarships are granted to the students from ODA countries. These scholarships are conferred for Masters, PhDs and post doctoral level. Students studying Swedish language and literature are also emitted this scholarship.
  2. Visby scholarships:
    Students from Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania come under Visby scholarship program which is also known as Swedish institute Baltic Sea Region Exchange program. Students from Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, and Russia are also included in this category. Students also receive scholarships and grants for their projects. This program is available in three separate categories.
    1. Master's level education in Sweden under Visby Scholarship Program:
      Academic Year 2009/2010
      For year 2009/2010 student from Russia, Ukraine and Belarus come under this program. The main objective of this program is to fabricate more substantial joint collaboration among Sweden and other member states on research area and education.
      How and when to apply?
      Students can find an online application for Swedish Master’s Program by December 1st at http://www.studera.nu/English. Applications should be submitted by January 15th. Students that want to apply for SI scholarship should be accepted for Swedish Master’s program first which is made by a formal offer from www.studera.nu. Applications accepted for scholarship will be announced at www.si.se by beginning of June. The scholarships that will start by the fall semester 2009 are of SEK 8000 per month. They are granted for one academic year which means making it eligible for two years but expand for those programs that are longer than two semesters as well.
      Eligibility criteria
      These scholarship programs are aimed for those guest students that belong to the group above mentioned for full time studies with temporary stay in Sweden. These scholarships do not hold any age limit. Following is the list which makes a student ineligible for this scholarship:
      • You can not have this scholarship if you have lived for two years or more in Sweden at a time when the scholarship time phrase is due to start.
      • If you carry a permanent residence permit of Sweden or a work permit.
      • If you have already used a scholarship previously from SI for studies in Sweden at Master’s or research level studies at any of Swedish universities. Yet one can apply for this scholarship program if he/she has attended a summer course in Swedish language or Swedish summer university institute.
      Travel supporting grants
      Students who get this scholarship also get a travel support grant. Students from Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine receive SEK 4,000.
      Insurance for scholarship holders
      Like all student that come to Sweden for studies use insurances consequently scholarship holder are also provided insurance by the Swedish State Group for healthcare and accident during their scholarship tenure.
      Scholarship restrictions
      This scholarship program is fabricated in a manner to cover all the living cost of the holder during his/her stay in Sweden while it does not serves the family members. A student under this program can spend a maximum of one semester aboard while holding the scholarship if he/she is studying under two years Master’s degree. The scholarship tenure can not be modified or stretched.
       
    2. PhDs and post doctoral education in Sweden under Visby Program
      Who can use this program?
      Students from Belarus, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Ukraine and Russia can use this category of scholarships to study in Sweden. The fundamental objective of this program is to firm the cooperation and network among these countries and Sweden in the areas of research and education. Students who have studied Swedish language and literature as major subject at bachelor levels can use this scholarship program.
      Deadlines
      The deadline for submission of forms for academic year 2009-2010 is March 1st 2009. This scholarship grants SEK 12000 per month to PhD students and SEK 15000 for post doctoral degree. The time phase for this program is established for 6, 12 or 18 months only. It is an excellent opportunity for PhD students and researchers to administer research for all departments of studies in Swedish universities.
      PhD student's categories
      PhD students are divided into two parts. The first division includes students(candidates) that apply for one time long term visit as division of PhD studies at the home university while the second division includes students that apply for scholarship on the basis of sandwich model (several shorter visits).
      Students applying for post doctoral research visit to any of Swedish university by plying this scholarship program should hold PhD degree more suitably from 2004 or afterwards.
      Eligibility criteria
      Students who intend for this scholarship should belong to any of the previously mentioned group for guest student or researchers. No age limit is conferred for the scholarship holder. Priority is given to those PhD students who are enrolled in an ongoing PhD studies in their own country. Those candidates are not given priority who had already received a scholarship from SI for study and research at a Swedish university. Students that have attended a Swedish Institute summer course in a Swedish Language or the Swedish Institute summer University can apply for the program.
      Students are not eligible for this scholarship if:
      • They have already lived in Sweden for two or more years when the scholarship time phase is due to start.
      • They have a permanent residence permit for Sweden.
      • They have a work permit for Sweden and are not an EU citizen.
      Selection preference
      The candidates' applications are given preference on the basis of applicant previous academics, research quality, expertise and personal motivations in the field of projects of the host department. The strength of a research proposal in regards of their scientific quality, methodology, relevance and originality are also kept in consideration while in the final stage of selection, the students academic field, nationality, gender ad level of study also determines his/her preference for the scholarship program.
      Travel supporting grants
      The candidates are provided travel supporting grant with the scholarship. These travel grants are given once.
      SEK 2500 is given to the citizens of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland
      SEK 4000 is given to the citizens of Belarus, Russia and Ukraine.
      PhD students on a short term visit will receive travel grants in connection with every visit that is approved.

Swedish- American scholarships:

The Bicentennial Fund is precisely schemed for professional enrichment for students from US. They are also awarded for 2-4 week’s in an amount of SEK 30,000. This program is for professional enrichment and therefore is not applicable to studies and work related to academic qualifications. The fields of studies for this program include; politics, working life, human environment, public administration, mass media, education and culture, business and industry.

Scholarship for students from Pakistan:

Students from Pakistan only can use this scholarship. This program enables them to have Master’s or PhDs level studies in Sweden. It is to be kept under notice that the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan has halted Scholarship programs to Sweden for year 2009. This program is intended for all academic subjects. The scholarship program provides 900 Euro per month to MA and PhD students.
It is to notify that Pakistan’s Higher Education Commission (HEC) has halted all scholarship programs for 2009. There is no availability of Sweden scholarship for year 2009.
