Student life in Sweden

Social life

Like many countries larger cities have a lot more to offer than smaller cities consequently in Sweden though social life of students may not be very different but can be a matter of right set of circumstances depending on area and weather conditions. Sports:

Larger cities have more of out door activities like sporting activities in sporting clubs which are very popular among students. Several societies institute an extensive range of stirs in colleges and universities. It is obviously one's personal choice to choose any of them. Being part of these activities is one of the best ways to know new people and have a time out from studying.

Clubs and pubs:

Students in Sweden also go to clubs and pubs which are often near the campus. One can have food and drinks here at cost effective prices. Individuals elder than 18 years are eligible to have drinks while some cities admit people over 20 to have them.

Social norms and values:

Like many countries Sweden has too its cultural norms which are not laws but are respected by Swedes like one. Swedes people in general and students in specific are very punctual. They respect laws, and other rules and regulation of a social circuit. For example they do not smoke in general public places. Expenses are shared among students when they go out to eat. It is customary to remove your shoes if invited by a friend or anyone to his/her home. Swedes students are informal and always willing to help. 

Cost of living

The cost of living is high in Sweden. The immigration service insists the students to have 7300 crowns per month for them in Sweden. This amount can enable a student to spent time opulent here. The cost of water, electricity, telephone and broadband are included in students rent most of the time while food costs 500 crowns per week. Even if you are a student and do not do anything except for studying in Sweden and eat cheap food, it still will cost 5500 crowns per month.

Insurance

One can see that there are various types of insurances like personal insurance, house, healthcare etc, all students that study in Sweden have basic insurance policy as they may need them during their stay in Sweden.

Healthcare insurance:

Students often have health insurance for their health in Sweden as private health care is very expensive and if you are not having the right health insurance it might cost you a lot in need of time. A regular visit to doctor costs 1400 crowns while fixing a broken arm cost 7000 crowns.

Personal insurance:

Foreign students studying in Sweden often carry a personal insurance policy for several impetuses. Students form EU or EEA have “European heath insurance card”. This entitles them under the similar conditions as of a Swedish student.

House insurance:

Students get free house and other usage contents by being member of student unions. However not all student unions provide this facility.

Student Unions

All students in Sweden are part of any student union in college and university. These unions have played very significant part in university life of students. They represent the academic and social interests of every individual. The membership of a student union is compulsory and it requires small fee to become a member of one. After becoming a member of any student union one receives a student card that can be used in travelling and other discounts while shopping.

The post office

In Sweden one will not find a post office instead Sweden has a system where newsagents, local super markets, petrol and gas stations act as one. 

Banking

Students pay their bills via banks in Sweden. It is the only method plied by students to pay fee and bills. Many students open accounts in Swedish bank and then use it to transfer money etc.

Student jobs

As mentioned earlier that cost of living in Sweden is expensive therefore many students wield for student jobs.

The Cold Swede

Sweden is cold. Therefore the timing of socializing among students does not take place for most part of the year. But this does not mean that students in Sweden are not social. Be it anything, all does takes place indoor. Fika parties, clubs and pubs, dinners, all these activities take place indoor.
